View Full Version : Did I play this right?

This is a situation that happened to me and I'm still wondering if I played this right. I was on the big blind and was dealt pocket 9's. Only 3 other players called the blind so I raised it about 4 times the big blind and only 1 called. So the flop comes up 7 7 9 so I figured I had a full house so no problem so the other player checks and I go all in. Well needless to say they called and had pocket 7's and I was done. Was there something wrong with how I played it? Ever since that hand I've been second guessing a lot of my moves. I know when playing I should be in the moment but I really can't get this out of my head and I keep thinking that maybe I should've played it different. How would you have played it differently if at all?

You played it right... very unlucky flop for you but how could you know? If you had made a smaller raise your opponent would have re raised you and could you have folded a full house? Not sure i could of. And what other options did you have to play. Just very unlucky, i'd just put it put of your mind, and if it does keep bugging you you could just console yourself with the thought one day it'll be you flops quads against someones full house. :-)

Thanks for the post. I wouldn't bother worrying about it. This is very very uncommon. If you could put your opponent on quads and fold and be right, you're better than most. The only question I have is why would you go all in when you had a full house? Most players would be trapping when being this strong...

This seems to to be hand anyone could lose money on. I think this post is more about how you are dealing with it now by questioning yourself...that's the important issue here...don't change how you play because of this...unless there was $30 in the pot and you overbet by $500 or something...

If you were on the Big Blind, were you all in on the flop? Were they on the small blind...did all the money go in on the river?

Looking to help ease your mind....

The reason I went all in was because the person I was against seemed to call everything all night so I figured let me just grab all the chips I could. I knew they wouldn't fold because they hadn't folded a hand all night. They were getting lucky rivers so I guess I just wanted to be the one who finally got them. I guess I was also feeling very cocky once I saw the flop. After that hand I just felt like maybe there was a signal I missed, something that should've let me know to either play it slower or something. It's just got me second guessing my hands more and more lately.

Statiscally the odds of sumone hitting quads on the river, to your second nutted full house are not very good, if i had time id look it up, but they are not very good. You played your hand well. Even if you smooth checked to see what your opp was going to do, with the hand you were holding you were commited. It also happened on the computer, so dont let that beat change your style in any way. These hands will happen, its poker. But the rarity of these hands, and the odds youve flopped the nuts on that flop are usually in your favor. Kepp pluggin.

Well played. Just a very unlucky flop.

It's hard to fold a full house.

The probability of flopping a full house is 136 to 1

The probability of flopping quads is 407 to 1

I think but not sure but the probability an opponent flopping quads when you flop a full house is 55,352 to 1

In other words, don't think about it anymore, it shouldn't affect your play.

I can say that there is no turning back from an all in. I am not saying you could have folded here, but I am saying that you should always leave yourself a chance to replay the hand in your mind and have the imagination to minimize loss...I have to say most people probably end up all in here so you did nothing wrong...

Keep up the fight and keep playing well...good luck!

Next time you'll flop the full boat with :2h: :2c: and crack :as: :ah:!!!!!!!!!!

I want to thank everyone. I really do feel better. It's honestly the only hand that I could never get out of mind. I've had some pretty bad beats before but this had to be the worst of them and the thought of it just wouldn't go away. I doesn't help that for a week after anyone who saw it kept reminding me of it. I used to play a lot of tournies on 1 site but stopped playing for awhile because there was always at least 1 person who saw that and kept reminding me and I was really letting it get to me. I played for awhile this morning after reading what everyone said and I'll tell you I think I finally let it go because this morning I came in 5th in a tourney so I think I finally got it out of my head. Thank you!

You're welcome! Sometimes it's good to vent...now if this started happening once a week...I think it's time for the psychiatrist...
