I usually play 7 Card Stud everyday at Foxwoods at a minimum level of 10/20. Today really pissed me off, I lost $25 and was more upset about losing today then losing big.

Here’s what happened.

I sat down at a short handed table with 6 players, two of which were all buddy-buddy checking their hands down and telling each other what they have when it was heads up. They were playing silly and winning super small pots.

I was dealt Q-J-10 with a 10 in the door, the table was very passive meaning that most hands that were raised, everyone folded. So I raised to take control of the hand and represent at the very least a pair of 10s or better. Two players call, a Five and a Jack.

After the drop, the Jack pulls an Ace then bets, I don’t improve, so I fold and the five calls. The hand gets checked all the way to the river.

The Five looks at me and the other players and says, “I was Rolled!” for those who don’t know Stud, that means he started with 555 a very strong hand.

As I was gathering in my chips to leave the table, the guy holding the Jack says, “I knew he wouldn’t last long.”

So now I stand up and start gathering in my chips and say something totally out of character for me, I said, “What’s going on here, you guys are playing like a bunch of jerks, try playing some poker!’

The guy who checked down rolled fives says, “I respected you man, you shouldn’t be saying that.”

The other three players at the table chimed in to my support saying, "He's right, you're making the game bad!'

My response was simple, “If you respected me, then you would try to play poker and play your best to take everyone’s chips on the table, not check down hands heads up when you know you have your opponent beat.”

I am not sure what the lesson is here, except maybe:

The Trip Fives Showed No Honor and No Respect by Checking the Hand Down. Showing Mercy and Missing Opportunities to Win Big Money from Any Opponent is Junk.

This is Disrespectful to Poker, to Himself, and His Opponents.

Play Poker to Win as Much As You Can, by Doing That You Are Showing the Ultimate Sign of Respect to Your Opponents and Poker.

Agreed, PG. It all comes down to playing right. I despise it when players "waste" good hands by just checking them down. How often are you dealt a rolled hand? How often are you dealt AA? Stupid to waste it like that!

I saw Gob check down a Royal Flush because he wanted a $5 card protector and had to show the hand to get it...

:D

Yes Manny I did. The $5 card protector had a picture of "Lil' Bow-Wow" on it, a must have.

I've been playing a lot online recently - what with the rather bad weather and this happens online as well! It's silly that some players will play each other soft in an attempt to lose less money in a session. It's not as if they are even really trying to win. They are just there to kill time.
In my view these types of players are not true poker players and as a real poker player you should try to take them for as many chips as you possibly can.

Well Like I said it may sound harsh but beating your opponent soundly and fairly shows the ultimate respect for the game and should earn respect from all of your opponents, well at least in my opinion.

This is a good post. Thanks for the explanation about respecting the opponents. I think some people are playing just to waste time and maybe these players are the ones that can throw money around. Either way, any time you play, you should be giving it your all and club the people over their fat bald heads along the way.

I don't have self pitty on anyone that I play. I played against my brother-in-law the other day online at a ten man table. No one at the table knew that we knew each other. That still didn't stop me from taking $10 from him. haha Why wouldn't you. Play the game the way it's suppose to be. Don't be douchebags.
