Semi Bluffing
Posted On 09/12/2008 04:55:48 by PokerGob

Semi Bluffing In No Limit Texas Holdem.  One of the questions many online Texas hold’em players need to deal with is when to semi-bluff. No-limit hold’em offers unique opportunities for semi-bluffing, and good no-limit players will know what they are and how best to take advantage of them. Inexperienced can practice this strategy in play money games at free Texas Holdem sites.

What is the Semi-Bluff?

A semi-bluff is a play made when you do not yet have the best hand, but you have a hand that has the opportunity to become the best hand by the river. Examples of suitable hands for semi-bluffing are open-ended straight draws and flush draws.

Why Semi-Bluff?

A semi-bluff serves many purposes. It may win you a pot without the best hand, which is a positive outcome. It may get all the money in the pot for when you do make the best hand, resulting in a huge increase to your stack. It may also build a pot on the turn, allowing you to extract the maximum if you make your hand on the river, or to get away from the hand if you miss.

What Are the Best Conditions for Semi-Bluffing?

A semi-bluff is ideal when there is a pot worth winning and some likelihood your opponent will fold. If you know there is no chance your opponent will fold, you may be better off trying to get to the river and see if you make your hand as cheaply as possible. In addition, if hitting your hand does not create a strong likelihood that you will win, for example, you are drawing to a straight on a flushed board, or to a flush on a paired board, you probably should not semi-bluff and should in fact consider folding to a bet.
