Austrian Online Poker Launched
Posted On 02/09/2008 10:00:51
Boss Media's International Poker Network to welcome Austrian online poker fans.

The transaction between the Austrian state gambling authority and Sweden's Boss Media and state-run Svenske Spel to initiate a new online poker room came to completion this week on the Boss Media network.

In starting Internet poker operations at Win2Day.com, the Austrian government becomes one of only two European governments (the other is Sweden) to offer state-sponsored poker. The project was put together in association with the Swedish state gambling monopoly Svenske Spel and Swedish casino and poker turnkey provider Boss Media.

The latest site runs on the Boss Media International Poker Network and began initiating registrations Thursday, both for real-money play and for 4 special Euro 5,000 introductory freerolls for Austrian people. Marketing actions in the form of advertising have already initiated.

Win2Day also offers lottery and casinos under a license from the state's Österreichische Lotterien GmbH. An additional state business allowed to propose gambling in Austria - Casinos Austria - is a key investor in the lottery, and is using the new website to promote its global poker venues. Boss Media is best known for Fortune Poker that does not allow USA players however.

Developments will be tracked by the online poker industry.

Our favorites online poker sites are still Titan Poker, Doyles Room and Carbon Poker.

Skill vs. Luck in Poker and the Law

Skill vs. Luck in Poker and the Law

England Court of Appeals - Derek Kelly tried to demonstrate poker is a game of skill. The Court of Appeal has upheld a milestone judgment by a jury that poker is a game where chance and luck outweighs the player's skillfulness. Last January Snaresbrook Crown Court convicted Derek Kelly, 46, of operation unlicensed poker games and breaching two counts of the 1968 Gaming Act. Kelly appealed on the basis that the trial judge had misdirected the jury for the duration of his summary of the case. But the appeal court judges dismissed the appeal.

Throughout the appeal it was argued on behalf of Kelly that the trial judge should have aimed to the jury that a game in which skill overshadowed chance was not a game of chance. The appeal court ruled on Friday that there had been no disorder or intentions to mislead the jury. The act states a license is needed to host games of chance such as blackjack and roulette, but not games of skill, such as chess and quiz contest machines.

The trial revolved around Texas Hold 'Em Poker. The jury was asked to decide whether it was a game of skill or chance, or a blend of both. Lord Justice Thomas concluded by saying, "The jury was, on the evidence, plainly entitled to conclude that the game of Texas Hold'em was a game of chance as defined by the 1968 Act."

Poker Politics and the Presidential Candidates
Posted On 02/04/2008 06:50:33
The politics surrounding poker are very important to me. I do believe that contacting local politicians and asking them to rally for your cause is more likely to promote change then contacting the President of the United States. However, as you all know we will be getting a new President very soon. I have emailed the following candidates for the Presidential Election and I am awaiting their response. Realistically, I don’t think I will get a reply. After reading this post, please email them too.

Hillary Clinton, Senator from New York, said that she supports an industry study of Internet Gambling to see whether it can be fairly regulated.

eMail Hillary Clinton

Barack Obama, Senator from Illinois, said that he would encourage an industry study of Internet Gambling to see if it can be fairly regulated. He has also admitted that he enjoys playing poker for money and states on a website, “I am a pretty good poker player.”

eMail Barack Obama

Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts has no recognized position on internet poker. Hopefully he or one of his campaign team will email us back.

eMail Mitt Romney

Please email all the the above people and tell them you are an avid poker player and their view on online poker is important to you.

The poker craze is not only in the United States, it has also gained popularity in the rest of the world. China represents one of the fastest growing markets for poker players. New rules allow Macau Casino Operators to collect 3 to 5% of the betting pool for Texas Hold’em games. Macau is approximately 45 miles from Hong Kong and took in more gambling revenue than all of the Las Vegas strip. Macau returned to Chinese rule in 1999 and was formerly a Portugese Colony. Titan Poker and DoylesRoom have seen rapid growth in China because of televised events such as the World Series of Poker. PokerGob looks forward to seeing the developments of new casinos and poker players from China.

The Story Line in Poker
Posted On 01/31/2008 08:25:40
Betting patterns can be more important than actual physical tells like eye twitches or facial ticks. When I play poker I try to think about the story line of the hand. For example, let’s say I have observed an opponent play his or her flush draw against me or other players. I look for the “Story Line.” Is it the “Fictional Story Line” or the “Non-Fictional Story Line” that I am viewing and remember the hand and it’s outcome. The “Fictional Story Line” is the bluff and has a different pattern than the made hand. In a sense you can get into the mind of how this person thinks. How much did they bet when they were bluffing? Do they check- raise when flopping sets? What is their story line? You can include this information with physical tells and then piece the puzzle together. A poker face is an important side of poker of course, but when combined with the “Story Line” it can be a huge advantage. Poker tells and reading people are not the same. So next time you’re playing ask yourself, “What Story is This Person Trying to Tell!”
