Calling Stations in Donk Heaven
Posted On 01/31/2008 06:44:57
I was playing Low Limit Seven Card Stud where the antes were a half dollar and the minimum “Bring In” is $1 and the max bet is $5. After a long drawn out morning session. I played this hand and wanted to share it with you. I mean this is ultimate “Donk Heaven,” maybe I was the Donk, but I guess I should have chosen a better spot, you decide. I was the “Bring In” my hand is pocket fours and a 3 of Spades on top and came in for max bet $5. Player 1 with 7 of clubs and The Ultimate Calling Station Player 2 holding a 7 of diamonds called me. On 4th street I pick up an Ace of Spades so now I have three to a flush and a gut buster straight draw forming. Player 1 looks to have a club draw building by 5th street and I have been jamming the pot since the raise. The Calling Station has a messy off suit board and I can’t really figure what he has, so I check. Player 1 with 3 clubs showing checks, and Player 2 bets $5. I now raise it to $10 and Clubby calls and of course the Calling Station too. “Uh Oh!” I guess Player 1 has a weak flush already or at least 4 clubs. 6th Street gives him a 4th club showing for him. So I figure well if he didn’t have the flush he has it now, I surrender the hand and check and both players check behind me. My hand remains virtually the same, but I added a Queen of Hearts to my board. The Calling Station’s hand is still pretty messy and doesn’t hold a card higher than a Jack. On the river I am holding the highest card out of all three of us the Ace of Spades. So I act first and check again, because I figure I am beat by the flush and the Lord only knows what Player 2 has. We all check the River and both players give me this Deer in the Headlights look and check too. I laugh and immediately turn over my hand and say, “I got a pair of fours” Player 1 says, "I have A pair of Tens," and The Calling Station is ready to muck, but checks the river card and has paired a King in the Hole. Obviously I lost and then I hear the comment from another player, “Wow he check raised with a Pair of Fours, that’s all?” My thoughts were: how do you call a check raise without the flush draw and only a pair of Tens or No Pair and a King High. Just a funny hand, I am amazed at how the art of poker is lost sometimes. This hand proves just this; that people sometimes just don’t fold!

Top Ten Reasons Online Poker Should Be Banned
Posted On 01/25/2008 07:52:43

1. Online Poker is immoral unlike Off Track Betting and Horse Racing.

2. Online Poker is gambling not like the stock market.  No one has ever lost his or her "life savings" with a “sure thing” stock trade.

3. It will stop American obesity; Poker requires no physical activity, video games are better for hand eye coordination and burn more calories.

4. It is bad for children.  It is a gateway stimulus that could lead to drug use, prostitution or criminal behavior.

5. Online Poker Players become liars not like Government Officials or TV Evangilists.

6. Online Poker Companies make too much money for providing their service and Online Poker Companies are not allowed to operate within the United States where they could be taxed like reputable firms such as Enron.

7. Historic political figures and new politicians have never ever played poker especially not in the White House or in their homes.

8. Banning Online Poker will help make poker disappear no one will ever play again, especially in illegal underground poker rooms.

9. Too much competition for Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

10. Poker is very addicting, unlike tobacco, alcohol or illegal narcotics.

Never Invite A Vampire Into Your Home
Posted On 01/08/2008 14:01:11
I’ve heard that inviting a Vampire into your home is bad idea because you will be defenseless against them.  Last night, I started an early evening 7 Card Stud session and busted out within an hour.  Hands like rolled up trip aces cracked by straights, straight and flush draws on 4th Street ending in a pair of nines cracked by two pair.  You know these kinds of beats if you play 7 Card Stud or other variations of poker.

During the game I started talking to a player.  I mentioned that I saw professional player Paul Darden in the casino.  I explained how I thought he was a gentleman and how he had a great polished professional demeanor.  The guy told me he was Paul’s friend and that they carpooled together, I thought that was pretty cool and glad I talked nicely about Paul to him.  He busted out shortly after the conversation and walked off in disgust.  I too busted out and left the table gracefully and with a smile, as I usually do because I am known to take my beats well.

I walked to the cage and bought some more chips, call me crazy but I don’t like players at the table to see me rebuy in again.  But on the way back I saw Paul’s “friend” and he walked up to me and asked, “What kind of shape you in?”  I answered thinking he was asking me about my health, “I’m in pretty good shape I feel well, strong, what’s up?”  He asked, “Do you think you can hit me off with some dollars and I’ll get you back in a week?”  Funny, I guess Paul didn’t have a few bucks to spare as he was sitting at the 50/100 No Limit Hold’em table with about $20,000 in front of him.  “Sorry Buddy, I would if I could,” I said.

Now off to my break I had to pass the table where I couldn’t win a hand and saw the players chipping away at their own stacks while in every hand etc.  and one player in particular, we’ll call her Buffy, says with a big grin like she was excited I was coming back, “Aww, You’re Coming Back! Sit right here there’s room.”  I just smirked and said, “Nah, you guys are way too good for me tonight, you have enough of my cash.”  And I proceeded up the escalator to look as if I was leaving the casino.

After a nice break and some over priced Hot Dogs and a flat Pepsi I decided to go back to the “Stud Arena” and play again.  Of course Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was there.  She looked at me and asked me to sit down, so I did.  It was after midnight and she invited me back to the table, I could see the fatigue on her face and noticed her chip stack was a little higher than when I left.  What she didn’t know was that the whole time I was on break I was thinking of a strategy to beat that table and especially beat her.  I confidentially put my chips on the table and began playing.  30 minutes later Paul’s broke friend sits down and starts playing.  “Hey Man, I guess Paul hooked you up?” “No.” he said, “I don’t like to bother Paul when he is entranced in a game, he’s real serious.”

Thankfully, I got a few chips from him later and a few hours later after Buffy re-bought back in three times I left. As soon as I stood up to leave she said, “I want that seat.”  I laughed and said, “It’s not the seat.” And the Vampire walked out the casino with all her chips and a good night indeed!

Olympic Texas Hold'em
Posted On 01/02/2008 00:55:00

Poker is highly popular around the world.  I have seen some posts around the internet in trying to make Poker an Olympic sport.  I am not sure it fits in with the Olympics although I think it could be an interesting concept.  I saw a poll on MSNBC and the results pretty much told the story (the poll was from 2004.)  Now in 2008 I see a movement again for 2012, I just don't see it happening.  Let's try the vote again.

Visit the polls here on PokerGob to see what our members think?
