UIGEA – Online Poker Sites Geo-Targeting
If you live in the State of Washington you are legally not allowed to play online poker. As a matter of fact it is a felony if you reside within its borders. For most players and sites there was a “play at your own risk” attitude. The poker sites were allowing you to play despite the law. But that’s changed…
Generally, most online poker sites allow you to log onto their sites and play wherever you are, however today Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars are now blocking players from the Washington State. Players are being denied access to the tables and a message is being put into their lobby based on their IP address.
This is definitely the aftermath of last week’s Supreme Court ruling that upheld the law that makes it a felony to partake in online gambling in The State of Washington. Currently included in online gambling sites are online poker sites like Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker. There are some sites such as UB, Bodog and Absolute Poker that are still operating, however it’s eminent that they will follow along shortly.
It is not illegal to play online poker in all states in America, please check your state’s law regarding playing poker online. Whether it is legal or not, it’s your duty and right as a citizen to contact a politician in your state and determine their stance on the legality of online poker. Repealing UIGEA is highly unlikely this year as well as passing the H.R. 2267. It’s interesting to see what is next in the fight against allowing Americans to revel in the game they put on the map and enjoy.
