“It’s too bad my youthful spirit is encased in a mortal, aging body.”

Ok, I’ve had it! I tried not to address this until I see Patrik Antonius but yesterday was just too much. I did a radio interview with a station in Minnesota and one with a station in New Orleans. Both stations asked me about Patrik’s challenge to play me any game. I tried to be non-committal and not to say too much. Then, when I got to my other office, Orla, my Irish friend, sent me a link to where Patrik was in Monte Carlo talking about his challenge. After hearing him talk about it, my blood began to stir a little. Then, when I went to the Bellagio to pay off my NCAA basketball bets I had lost, there was CardPlayer Magazine with another story about it on the cover!

Then! My buddy, Dewey Tomko, who I think will be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame this year, asked me: “Do you think you can beat Patrik?” I answered, “No, Dewey, I have so much money I’m trying to throw some of it away. Of course I think I can beat him!” I know I’ve got a lot more experience at most of the games I’ll choose. If anyone under thirty years of age can let me pick any game at any time I want, I strongly believe I can beat them. If I don’t, the Brunson Family has three hundred acres on the top of a mountain at Big Arm, Montana. I’ll retire and move up on that mountain and enjoy the wildlife and the sunsets for the rest of my life. Even the television networks are calling, wanting to televise this match. My only problem with that is that the public might not understand some of the games I will keep introducing.

By the way, since Patrik is into making challenges, here is one for him. I read where he has taken up golf. So, I challenge him to play for $100,000 a hole at Bali Hai Golf Club, any time from now until the end of August. Surely a twenty-seven-year-old ex-professional tennis player from Finland can beat a seventy-four-year-old guy with an artificial shoulder and who has to use a crutch to walk. What do you say, Patrik? - DB

Congratulations to my pal Daniel Negreanu for winning the B.C. Poker Championship. Maybe he can’t play golf so well but he is really performing well in the poker tournaments. I used to laugh at Daniel’s and Phil Hellmuth’s “small ball” approach, but I’m a bottom line guy and it looks like they are the two best tournament players right now. My background is cash games and I don’t think the “small ball” play would do very well. It’s too late for me to change my style so I’m still going to try to bust my opponents at the poker table.

I must be behind the times because I lost two friends in the past few months and didn’t know it. Orville Moody, a former U.S. Open golf champ, passed away at the age of 74. Last time I saw him, he was telling me about all the course records he has in Texas. My other friend was Don Haskins, the basketball coach at UTEP. Don is in the basketball Hall of Fame and was the first coach to start 5 black players. He did that in the championship game against Kentucky in the 60’s. I played many a round of golf with Don when I lived in El Paso. My condolences to his family.

Speaking of El Paso, it reminded me of one day when one of my golfing friends offered to bet me $20,000 I couldn’t make 50% of my free throws on a basketball court. I laughed to myself because I thought I could with either hand or even underhanded. As I hadn’t touched a basketball in 30 years, I decided to go shoot and be sure. I also had injured both shoulders trying to water ski. When I got to the gym by myself, I was totally shocked. The basketball felt like it was a watermelon and I could barely get the ball to the rim. Good thing I went to practice because I could never have made half of them. It made me think of the old saying, “buzz, buzz, what you usta wuz.”

I’m off to Costa Rica to make some plans for DoylesRoom. I’ll be back for the Bellagio tournament. I hope some of the “small ball” boys work up enough courage to come play in Bobby’s Room!

Caddie: Sir, why do you play so much golf?

Daniel: It’s the most fun I’ve ever had with my clothes on.

Another one of my longtime friends passed a few days ago. Sammy Baugh, arguably the greatest quarterback in football history, died at age 94. Baugh was the last surviving member of the inaugural Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you are too young to remember “Slinging Sammy”, he played for the Washington Redskins for 15 years. One season, he led the league in passing, defensive interceptions and punting. He still owns the NFL single season punting record with a 51.4 yards per kick.

Baugh was the football coach at my University when I was in school. I saw him in practice one day punt the ball from the 50 yard line out of bounds inside the seven yard line 6 times in a row. Sammy and I had a lot in common as we grew up 20 miles apart and went to the same high school. He was a fine man and wanted to be remembered as a great rancher instead of a great football player. .

I’ve lived in Las Vegas since 1973 and I have never seen as much snow as we had this week. Most people were complaining, but I actually liked it because I’ve never been around much snow. There were lots of “fender benders” because Nevada drivers aren’t used to driving on slick streets. I saw a terrible accident on Tropicana as a kid on a motorcycle got hit and I’m afraid it was a fatal collision. I hate motorcycles and would never allow any of my children to ride them. .

I played in the first filming of GSN’s High Stakes Poker last night. I really enjoy playing in these cash games and had a 12 game winning streak going into the game. We had a good lineup with Eli Elezra, Phil Laak, Tom “Durr” Dwan, Mike Baxter, Alan Meltzer, Dario Minieri and David Peat. We can’t give any details but I will tell you, I play again tomorrow night and I’ll be going for win #14 in my cash games. .

Congratulations to Chino Rheem for winning the Doyle Brunson Classic Championship at the Bellagio. It comes on top of a final table finish at the WSOP for Chino. .

Caddy: Sir, you aren’t addressing the ball properly.
Daniel: I’ve been polite to the damn thing long enough.
